Your journey begins early in the morning as you depart Marrakech and head south through the winding roads of the High Atlas Mountains. Along the way, you’ll cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest road pass in Morocco, with plenty of chances to stop for photos and enjoy the sweeping mountain views.
Around midday, you’ll visit the famous ksar of Ait Ben Haddou a stunning ancient village made of mudbrick, known for its unique architecture and as a backdrop to many Hollywood films. After a short walk through its narrow alleys and a climb to the top for panoramic views, you’ll continue your drive through Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa.”
As the landscapes shift, you’ll pass through the Draa Valley, filled with palm groves and small Berber villages. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Merzouga, right at the edge of the vast Sahara Desert. Here, your camel guide will be waiting to lead you on a camel trek across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. You’ll ride into the heart of the desert as the sun begins to set an unforgettable sight.
At the desert camp, you’ll be welcomed with mint tea and a warm dinner. Spend the night in a private tent, with the option of a luxury camp, and enjoy traditional Berber music around the campfire under a sky full of stars.
Wake up early to catch the sunrise over the dunes—it’s a peaceful and magical moment you won’t want to miss. After breakfast at the camp, you’ll return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4, then begin the long drive north toward Fes.
The journey takes you through the beautiful Ziz Valley, known for its dramatic gorges and endless palm trees. As you continue, the desert scenery gradually gives way to the forests and mountains of the Middle Atlas. You’ll pass through Midelt, a town nestled between the High and Middle Atlas ranges, where you’ll stop for lunch.
In the afternoon, continue through cedar forests near Azrou keep an eye out for wild Barbary macaques along the roadside. You’ll also pass through Ifrane, a charming alpine-style town often called “Little Switzerland” for its European feel and clean, peaceful atmosphere.
